The Green
Movement forgot about Nuclear Power... Had it not been for
the anti-nuclear movement and the Clamshell Alliance back in
the 70's there would be no solar or wind industry... the
grassroots community which gave birth to the Whole Earth
Catalog and Mother Earth News understood the dangers of the
peaceful atom... culminating with the NoNukes concert in
1979 where half a million people filled Battery Park in
Manhattan... and then... everybody went home.
In the 90's
most solar electricity companies were bought up by oil
interest, and today wind power companies are accepting
nuclear energy money. What started out as an independence
from the Utilities movement lost out to the monopolies it
originally set out to free itself from.
In essence, what
could have been an explosive growth industry for solar and
wind in the last Century, dwindled down to a trickle as more
Federal subsidies were spend on oil, coal and nuclear...
leading to out of control Global Warming, and the alarm
bells we hear today.
It's true, solar
and wind industry professionals get their paycheck from the
very same people they set out to dethrone when
environmentalism was king and Earth Day 1970 motivated 30
million Americans to take to the streets that day... We were
going to Save The Planet back then, just like we are now...
except... to quote the Who... new boss, same as the old
boss... nothing has changed... solar and wind still only
makes up for a sliver of the electrical production in the
world today.
It's not because
the technology doesn't work, it's because the bulk of human
resources has gone to undermine its growth rather than
nurture it. It's still the R&D underdog... an opportunity
for the rich to cash in on subsidies... the market has been
rigged from the start... for solar and wind to fail in the
marketplace on its own, because environmental costs were
never taken into account.
Yet, with
evidence of planetary destruction, mining, pollution, oil
spills, toxic waste, death of species, rampant disregard for
the earth that gives us life... it's plain to see oil and
coal are killing everything that's dear to us... but the
worst pollution of all, silent, deadly... enriched uranium
in all its many poisonous forms... the last bastion of
central control possible for the energy rich families who
cornered us... is there, like the elephant in the room...
every single old, dirty, decaying, dangerous nuclear power
plant in America being relicensed one by one... when
everyone knows many of them are leaking radioactive isotopes
from cracking fuel rod pools into ground water... and
there's no end in sight as to what to do with the waste...
billions upon billions of dollars spent on an industry so
out of control, most anti-nuclear activists have given up,
gone home, retired...
The result is
that this new generation of young green designers,
architects, thinkers, philosophers, know absolutely NOTHING
about the history of the anti-nuclear movement and the birth
of the environmental movement in general... They have no
context in history... they think everything will be OK if we
build according to LEED, and switch everything over to clean
power... organic agriculture... natural fabrics... love,
flowers, good deeds and wishful thinking... this as the
nuclear waste problem gets worse and worse...
Nothing short of
a crash program to develop Solartopia alternatives can save
us from our fate... that is why, today, if the solar and
wind energy professionals don't start to get involved in a
real physical sense and public way into the fight to slow
down Global Warming and rid the world of nuclear power... we
may as well throw in the towel, it's over... and these sad
anti-nuclear warriors will have been right to go hide in
Woodstock to let the world fall apart!
America consumes
in excess of 35% of the world's resources... it's a HOG...
exemplified by Hummers, McMansions and aisles of Cheetos on
super market aisles. Imagine if suddenly this country was
put on a crash diet? The boom this would be for solar and
wind, and all the alternatives? Americans would have NO
CHOICE but to alter their lifestyle... today it's no longer
a matter of "choice"... we can no longer afford to live and
let live... the pesticides and herbicides you dump on your
lawn are poisoning MY water supply... It's war! It's
eco-fascism... tuff!
In the mid-90's
a new movement sprung from the deep, sacred woods of
Siberia, which has given birth to hundreds of eco-village
communities all throughout the old Soviet Union, now
threatening the authority of Moscow... this movement, the
Anastasia movement, has reached our shores, having the same
impact here, reinvigorating old communes, building new
ones... trees as sacred, an acre of National Forest produces
MORE food than an acre of farm land!!! Think about THAT for
a moment... how we totally messed up.
This is a plea
to solar and wind pros... STOP kow-towing to the Utilities
to secure your contracts... REMEMBER what you got into the
GAME for... what it's ALL about... it's about saving the
planet... it's not ornamental or a life style choice to
plant a windmill or install solar on your roof! It's a
divine mission to restore the earth... it's a religion...
it's a union with the ground beneath your feet and the sun
in the sky... it's about reconnecting with Gaia... cradle to
cradle industries... caring all the way down the line...
like one cares for a beloved child.
If you don't see
or feel that, if to you, installing solar or working for a
wind company, is no different than slapping on aluminum
siding... doing engineering for a nuclear power plant one
week, doing a wind industry job the next, then you're in the
wrong business... you don't deserve to be there, you just
don't get it... you're a disgrace to the movement... you
should be ashamed of yourself cashing that pay check... it's
dirty money... it stinks!
We have a chance
today, to take a stand, stop this, dead in its tracks... A
couple of days ago the NRC accepted the Indian Point nuclear
power plant's relicensing application, or more precisely,
for a "new superceding" license, that's so full of holes,
that's so faulty, corrupt, deceptive, ill-advised... that
nobody in their right mind can think genuinely caring good
beings could allow such a travesty to take place. We can
stop them there! Resist! Win! Shut down the plant... free
the Hudson valley of Entergy's tyranny.
And yet, the
dozens of solar energy companies that showcased their wares
inside the Green Tent at the Clearwater festival this year
are "silent" for fear of losing their collective bread crumb
Utility contracts... their limited netmetering options...
sheep in a coral guarded by a wolf in sheep's clothing!
Don't you all see... these hand outs from organizations like
the CT Clean Energy Fund are just that, HAND-OUTS, to keep
you small and pacified... so as to control the growth of the
solar and wind market, constrict supply, make sure it never
competes on its own merrit... which the Prius has PROVED can
happen, when people care, have heart... understand the
issues and the consequences of where they invest their
money, and HOW they make their living!
STOP feeding the
dragon... you don't want a war in Iraq? STOP paying your
taxes, go on strike, DO something for Pete sake... don't
just stand there lamenting about how awful this
administration is... drag them out of there, like in the
good ol'days, with a little bit of sweat and tears... put
some backbone into it, my God!
That's why I
dedicated my life to the environmental movement... helped
and assisted, volunteered and down to the bone worked my
tail off to grow solar, wind, electric vehicles, green
consumerism... it's so we could get to this point, where
we'd have enough leverage, to say... NO... we're not going
to take it anymore... I, unlike many of my friends and
colleagues, have NEVER sold out... maybe because I didn't
have to... being nouveau pauvre... but somebody had to keep
the midnight oil burning!
It's time now...
time to disconnect, pull the plug, dissempower the people
and the industries you feel are responsible, criminal...
they just can't keep printing more and more money in the
basement... sooner or later all these Union workers will get
it, how their bosses have misled them... made a deal with
the devil... that's destroying the natural world... for
greed and profit of a few, like David Rockefeller, that
dirty old man in Tarrytown with a hog named BORIS!
Yes, I'm just a
burned out old tired activist, a dog who never had his
day... who built an empire of dirt... but I saw it coming,
because I was there at every critical junction, when
people peeked the light at the end of the tunnel... all
these books, millions of books, about how to make things
right... and yet so few have read any of them... the
majority stuck in front of the tube... watching GM and GE
commercials, telling you how committed they are to your well
being... LOOK OUTSIDE... do you see any change? Young people
still drooling for that fancy sports car... that plastic
babe with the silicon balloons... we haven't evolved a day
since Giraffe Women! Can't you see it's torture to a soul in
tune with nature?
Torture...
you're killing Faeries, is what you're doing... and you
don't even know... cause they're invisible to you... because
you don't understand that there's more than just one world
on this earth... we share it with so many other
intelligences who live on so many other planes of
existence... and we are killing it all burning all this
stuff for power... when the sun and the wind is there,
beckoning, use us... use us... there's plenty to go round if
you just do it right, learn to share a little... open your
heart to the one next to you... take from your plate and
offer bread so none of us go hungry.
Is that so much
to ask? Or are you all going to walk, like lamb to the
slaughter, into this OneWorldNuclearOrder Al Gore, Robert
Kennedy Jr. and Paul Newman has promised you, as the ONLY
solution to an artificially created crisis... designed to
take control of your soul and your pocket book... keep you
fed with entertainment, amusing yourselves to death while
the natural world, which supports your breath, is eclipsing
right before your eyes? Wake up people... yank the chain
that binds you... say no more... inspect every aspect of
everything you buy and consume... where does it come from,
who made it... don't put it on your body, or in your mouth,
unless you feel you're OK with it... no compromise in the
defense of mother earth... and yes, fanaticism... at the
midnight hour, is OK...
